Have you seen an artist at work?

How she often steps back with a reflective pause?

The brush resting against the thumb,

Teeth biting the lips in thought…

A new perspective is sought

And then she returns

To the easel

Closer than before

Now seeing the hidden form,

Exposing it to view…

Requires brilliant splashes of color

Careful smudges too

Some lines erased again

New etchings bared

What seemed destructive

And chaotic at close quarters

Allows the larger design to be shared…

A canvas of beauty sublime

The posterity and perfection

Now visible for all to see

Only when it is all done

Do we know

What was wanting to be
