Poems: When We Remember

When we remember
That death could be round the corner
Conflicts fade away.
Love becomes more important.
Forgiveness and apology
Come easier and are more urgent,
The chaff quickly separates from the grain.

When we remember
That life could yet be long
Whatever is ongoing may extend
Then our backbone straightens
Our silence learns to give way…
Difficult conversations, changes
Uncomfortable resolutions
Become the obvious need of the day.

When we remember
We sit on the edge, always
The full gift of each breath
Can be drawn in
The expression of our wholeness
Is effortlessly exhaled.
Our role is understood
And gracefully played…

Full, yet empty.
Material, but insignificant.
Eternal, yet temporary.
Of that enormous ocean
We are simply
A gently rising and falling wave.
